Show Your Wings!

Welcome to day two, and my day, for the Show Your Wings Blog Hop, hosted by Carol of Just Let Me Quilt! Thanks Carol for hosting this fun hop!!

When I started thinking about what project I would make, my mind was kind of in a whirl! So many things have wings – planes, birds, butterflies, angels, etc.! But my sweet granddaughter loves all things owl, so I knew I had to do something with an owl. Since I am a digitizer, I also have a lot of owl clip art I have purchased through the years, so into my folders I dove and decided on my project!

I used a combination of applique and digitized embroidery for my final product. I purchased the art work for this cute little owl from Trina (Walker) Clark several years ago and it’s just been waiting for it’s time to shine! So, without further ado, let me introduce you to my sweet little owl!!

We haven’t had much cold weather here in Alabama, but I know the northern states have had a lot of snow and ice and subfreezing temps. So I thought this saying with Trina’s owl was perfect.

This is the part of the design that was digitized and stitched out with the embroidery machine. Of course, kindness warms the heart whether the temp is cold, hot, or somewhere in between!

Here is the teaser I put on Instagram a week or so ago. Since then I’ve been quite under the weather, so I just finished up the project on Monday.

I used my new Scan-N-Cut DX, that DH gave me for Christmas, to cut out the shapes. I first enlarged them to the size I wanted and pulled the “pieces” apart to make the cuts! The Girl loves pink and purple, so I used those fabrics for the owl and hat. I was able to use the lines on the mat and on the software to know exactly where to place my fabric. I made two cutting files. This is the first cut. I love this thing!! It’s so easy – just fuse the Heat-n-Bond Lite to the back of the fabric, cut to size, and place the fabric where you want it on the mat. Then line up the pieces of the applique to coincide with the fabric and cut! Voila – all the pieces of the applique cut out, just that quickly and easily! Sorry, I didn’t take a picture of all the applique pieces after cutting them.

Next, I cut a 13 x 13 inch square of background fabric and placed the applique pieces down, fused them, then stitched in place with my machine. I added some backing to the back of the pillow top before stitching down the appliques, then trimmed the excess batting, giving the top a trapunto look. Thank you, Dione of The Clever Chameleon, for this tip!! Next, I attached the embroidered piece to the bottom, squared it up and added borders to make it 16 x 16. Then I added batting and backing and quilted it on my domestic machine. I finished it up with a little hand-embroidered detail – french knots for the birds eyes and long running stitches for the butterfly “trails!”

Two pieces of fabric were cut for the pillow back measuring 11 x 16 inches. The raw edges were folded down about half an inch, folded again, pressed, and stitched in place. With right sides together, I stitched the back to the front creating an easy envelope pillow cover.

Next, trim the corners, turn, press the cover, and stuff a pillow form into it. And, here we have the finished project!

Unlikely Friends!
Yes, I think my Angel Girl will definitely want this for her bed!!

Since owls and birds generally do not get along, this pattern is called Unlikely Friends!!

I hope you have enjoyed seeing my Show Your Wings project. There will be a pattern for sale a little later. I’ll send out a post when it is ready. So, if you are interested in the pattern, and aren’t subscribed to my blog, just fly right up to the subscription form and subscribe! Whatever illness I’ve had has just taken the wind out of my sail, so I’m slowly getting back in the groove. I hope to have it ready by the end of the month before the sale is off.

I also have a digitized version of this pillow in several sizes that is available in the Embroidery Shop here, if you are interested. To commemorate a major birthday, all my designs are on sale 65% off through the end of the month!

Below is a schedule of all the bloggers participating in the Show Your Wings Blog Hop. Please stop by, enjoy their creations, and leave a kind comment. Your comments always make our day!!

That owl and bird are so cute and the trapunto applique method really brings out the design…love it! The Scan-n-Cut sounds interesting. I had a cutting machine, but I wasn’t crazy about it so I gave it to my daughter. I’ll have to check that one out. Thanks for hopping with us and sharing some great ideas for applique.

Hi Brenda! Is this little owl pillow going to be for your granddaughter? What a friendly looking owl – I can see why both the bird and the butterfly want to hang out near it. What a great idea to add the hand sewing showing the line the butterfly took on its path. I have seen Dione share that trapunto method but have never tried it myself. You two are inspiring me to give it a shot on the next feasible project. ~smile~ Roseanne

Cute owl and I love your process. I am not really a fan or owls as of late, but maybe that is because there is one that love to hang outside my bedroom window and makes quite a ruckus in the middle of the night.

I got an email from you that you are having a fabulous sale in celebration of a milestone birthday. My embroidery machine died and I have not replaced that machine. I’m sewing on my Featherweight now. I wish I knew if I am going to replace it with an embroidery machine or not because this is a terrific sale. Congratulations on your birthday and thanks for celebrating with all your friends. You are gracious. Susan

Your little owl is just too cute! I bought some of that great print on the front when Hancock’s was in business. It was cut in strips, and I used it in one of the grands’ I Spy quilts.
